Innovative Test Systems has developed a line of ERW scanners over the years. As our experience grows and as we incorporate inputs from various customers as well as from our own testing, our systems are becoming more and more adaptable, easier to use and maintain, and less expensive. Our newest system is modular in design. This allows up to put together the modules necessary to fit most ERW lines and cover most diameters, all with the same modules. This allows us to deliver a system quickly and inexpensively which benefits from all our experience without giving up any of the quality. Of course, our early systems are all still running as well and they too have many applications. The bottom line is that we already have the blueprints to your ERW inspection needs.
Innovative Test Systems has recently unveiled its newest line of ERW Weldline Scanners. These scanners are modular in design. They can be configured to operate either Online or Offline, used on “centerline” or “bottom-line” mills, and with or without weld seam following. These systems can scan pipe from 3” to 20” in diameter. The system is designed to be used with different types of ultrasonic transducers including conventional, involute and phased array as well as eddy current probes. See the Configuration Matrix for the possible combinations
In addition to employing the latest 3-D CADD software, we also employ the latest finite element design software. Examples of these can be seen at Fun With 3-D Modeling.
We use instrumentation from any number of manufacturers. These systems below use Krautkramer’s PC 2100 UT system. The control console is by ITS.
The online system shown below is for a centerline mill. The height of the system remains fixed. The calibration stand is located alongside the system where the transducer head can be swung out and over to facilitate calibration at anytime. The system rendered and photographed below also has weld following which is in the form of the ring. This system can rotate +/- 90 degrees from the vertical. The calibration stand is motorized so that the calibration standard oscillates back and forth while the operator sets his ultrasonic parameters. The operator swings the arm out manually and locks it in place.

ERW Off-line Systems
The Off-line system below is designed for use on a bottom-line mill. To accommodate the varying pipe centerlines, the entire frame can be jacked up or down. This particular installation did not require weldline following and so the ring is not incorporated. This system is a variation of the on-line system above, assembled from out modules. See the Configuration Matrix for the possible combinations.
The upper portion of the calibration stand is the same, but is mounted on jacks as well. When calibration is required, the calibration is driven electrically upward beneath the transducers where the same oscillation is provided for ultrasonic setup. Once completed, the stand lowers to allow the production pipe to pass overhead. Picture below shows system in our shop and installed in mill.

Innovative Test Systems has just finished the installation of this ERW Weld Line Scanner. It uses Krautkramer's new PC2100 PC based data system. Typical pipe diameters are 2” up to 8”.
